Care Navigation

Our receptionists are here to help and direct you to the most appropriate service. This means that they may need to ask you what is your reason for wanting to attend surgery. Please be assured that this only to assess if an alternative service would be more suitable to help you.

Most minor ailments can be treated by a local pharmacy and a quick visit to your local chemist should be able to sort most minor ailments. Dental problems need to go to a local dentist and not the GP.

Our reception staff will be able to direct you and are here to help. Please speak to them with your concern or visit the following link:

New Patients Welcome

The practice is currently accepting new patients.

If you live in the Burnley area all you need to do is collect registration forms from reception and bring some ID to register. We will do the rest! Your medical records will then be transferred electronically from your current practice and available for our doctors/nurses to see at your first visit.

PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR GP PRACTICE

We would ask that our patient attend the surgery for their flu vaccine. The vaccination we offer is called a ‘quadravalent flu vaccine’ and is designed to protect against four different flu viruses; two A strains and two B strains of the virus. This should offer the best protection from the anticipated strains of flu.

We know that some patients are planning to have their vaccine with other providers (pharmacies). We are aware that some providers may only offer a trivalent (3 strains). We would prefer you to have the quadravalent vaccine to maximise your protection against flu.

Please make you appointment now at reception.

FLU VACCINATIONS

Its that time of year again! Our flu season will soon be approaching and we are now offering appointments for September’s Flu Clinics. If you are in one of the ‘at risk’ groups or want to find out if you’re eligible for a free flu vaccine, please contact the surgery today on 731361.
WE REALLY WOULD APPRECIATE OUR PATIENTS ATTENDING OUR FLU CLINICS – we realise that many local pharmacies offer flu vaccines and that this may be more convenient for some patients. However, we do feel that we offer more than just the flu vaccinations, if gives the practice the opportunity to look at your record and see if there is any other help we can offer.

28 DAY PRESCRIBING

Why your GP practice prescribes medicines at one month intervals

If you are being prescribed medicines on a repeat prescription, then the amount of medicine you receive on each prescription may change. Your GP practice is changing to ‘28 day prescribing’, which means that each time you get a prescription, you will receive enough of each medicine to last you one month.

What is the reason behind this change?

Research has shown that a very large amount of medication is wasted when doctors prescribe for two months (56 days) resulting in the loss of millions of pounds of NHS money. This money could be used to provide services elsewhere in the NHS. The Department of Health supports one month prescribing and has said: “A 28 day repeat prescribing interval is recognised by the NHS as making the best possible balance between patient convenience, good medical practice and minimal drug wastage”.

How will 28 day prescribing affect you?

If you are being prescribed a “repeat medicine” your doctor will now start to prescribe enough of each medicine to last you for 28 days. For example, if you are taking 2 tablets a day you will receive 56 tablets, 3 tablets a day 84 tablets, 4 tablets a day 112 tablets etc. Are there any exceptions? There are some drugs which are packaged in 3 monthly amounts e.g. contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). These will continue to be supplied in this way.

What are the benefits of 28 day prescribing?

You will always start (and finish), the container of each medicine on the same day of the week. In this way, it will be easier for your doctor to review all of the repeat medicines you are taking and to see if you might be having problems with any of your medicines. Companies already manufacture a large number of medicines in 28 day ‘calendar packs’ that show the day of the week on the packaging. This packaging allows you to check and monitor that you have taken your medication each day. These packs also have patient information leaflets inside and ideally the pack should not be broken into as they are designed to be supplied with this information included.

28 day prescribing reduces the amount of medicine which is currently wasted when medicines are stopped or changed by doctors. It also reduces the amount which is wasted when partly filled containers are thrown away.

At the moment, a large number of patients make several visits a month to the surgery because their medicines run out at different times. As you will finish your medicines all at the same time, you should only have to visit the surgery once a month to collect your repeat medicines.

It will also reduce the likelihood of needing to make an emergency request if you run out of medicine. Will it cost patients more? The vast majority of patients collecting repeat prescriptions do not pay prescription charges; therefore there will be no difference to these patients in terms of cost. If you do have to pay prescription charges and you need more than 5 prescription items in 4 months (or 14 prescription items in 12 months), the best way to pay for your prescriptions would be to obtain a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC). Ask at reception for more information.

NHS choices website at www.nhs.uk has lots of reliable medicines related information Summary 28 day prescribing has important benefits for patients. The way you take your medicine will remain the same, only the amount of medicines you receive on each prescription will change. All medicines should last for the same number of days. If you are running out of some items or have too much of some medication, please tell the practice. Do not stockpile medicines at home; only order those items that you need.

Thank you

On the 12th June 2017 the way you order a prescription will change

Following audits of repeat prescription ordering and in efforts to reduce wastage of medicines, East Lancs Clinical Commissioning Group (EL CCG) are supporting practices to cease accepting third party prescription ordering from local pharmacies. Our Patient Participation Group have also been involved in the implementation of this work.
In other areas this new repeat prescribing procedure has resulted in reduced wastage and has also helped to free up practice time. The CCGs Medicines Management Team is currently working with Yorkshire Street Medical Centre to implement the new system which promotes patient empowerment and ownership of repeat medication needs.

Patients failing to attend

We hope that most of our patients would agree that we work hard to offer excellent access to our GPs and nurses? However a few patients really do spoil this by either making appointments and then failing to attend, or making them and then cancelling them at the last moment. We realise that on occasions some patients will have valid reasons for cancelling appointments, however there are a few patients who constantly abuse the system in this way.

This affects the access for other patients who really do need our services. Please only book appointments if you fully intend to keep them. If you do have to cancel, please let us know in plenty of time so that we can offer that appoinment to someone else.

In one afternoon, we have had 7 failed appointments. This is not acceptable.

Monday, 19 January 2015

Cervical Screening Awareness Week

Did you know that 20% of British women don’t go to their cervical screening – that is 20% too many!

Are you worried about having the cervical cancer screening? For some it could be mildly uncomfortable for a few minutes at most – isn’t it worth being healthy in the long run? Our practice nurses understand these worries and are happy to discuss them with you.

Please ask our receptionists to check when your screening is due.

Antibiotics

We’ve seen a rise recently in the number of patients requesting urgent appointments for minor ailments where they expect antibiotics. Most minor ailments such as coughs, colds and sore throats do not require any medication, apart from simple analgesics/paracetamol to help relieve the symptoms. We do ask that everyone keeps a well stocked medicines cabinet so that when they feel unwell they are able to treat the symptoms themselves. Most minor ailments are very common and will last 3-5 days as the body’s immune system fights to combat the illness. The overuse of antibiotics actually creates a resistence and affects our bodies from being able to fight these and more serious illnesses. If in the future you do require antibiotics for a more serious problem, there is then the potential that they might not work effectively. This is why the doctors are keen to reduce the prescribing of antibiotics for minor illnesses.

Named GP for patients aged 75 & over

Named GP for patients over 75
New service for patients over 75.

You may be aware that from April all practices are required to provide all their patients aged 75 and over with a named GP who will have overall responsibility for the care and support that our surgery provides to them.

If you are in this age category you will be allocated to your registered GP. This GP will then have overall responsibility for monitoring the care and support that our surgery provides to you.

This does not prevent you from seeing any GP in the practice as you currently do.

You do not need to take any further action, but if you have any questions, or wish to discuss this further with us, please contact us on 01282 731361.

Thursday, 15 May 2014

Practice Area

Recently we have had a large number of our regular patients move addresses outside of the Burnley area but wishing to remain on our list. Although we have been happy to retain regular patients on our list in the past, we now have a problem that as the number of patients residing outside the Practice boundary increases, this has an impact on the day-to-day services at the Practice.
Following home-visit requests, the time taken by our doctors to visit patients at various locations both in and outside the practice area is using too much of the time that the doctors need to see patients at the surgery site. For this reason, we have had to reconsider our Practice area and have now taken the decision that from March 2013 any patient moving outside the boundary will be asked to register at an alternative surgery. Any new patient wishing to join the list will be asked to provide documentation confirming their address as within our Practice area.
Practice area codes include BB10, 11 & 12 (not inclusive of Fence, Barley, Newchurch)-our practice does not cover codes BB4, 5, 7, 8 & 9
